Where to Train as a Piercer in South Africa

To anyone interested in Body Piercing in South Africa, the continent of Africa, or any country that does not offer formalized Body Piercing or Body Modification Training Facilities or regulations for such.

I want to ask if you ever had a piercing that just never wanted to finish healing and still maybe gives problems? Or you had to retire the piercing eventually for the pain and discomfort just never let up even after months or years of waiting for it to heal? Have you ever had to consult a medical doctor because of a piercing site causing you pain and discomfort? Have you ever felt a piercer has ripped you off with the service offered and the price they charge for that service? Have you ever left a piercing room feeling you do not want to be pierced there? Have you ever realized while sitting in the piercing chair while waiting for that needle to approach, “oh my, this piercer doesn’t know what they are doing “ These scenarios make you wonder, don’t they?

Have you ever thought of turning your keen interest in Body Piercing into a line of income for yourself? Have you ever considered to start doing body piercing as it simply makes you feel excited, alive, and engaged?

Then, maybe you acted on the inspiration. If you are serious about acquiring a professional skill set to apply in a commercial setting of any kind, you would search the existing Training Facilities, Top Professionals in the trade, and online training options. If you are a professional in South Africa, with a professional Skill Set already, you would probably look at the Seta training options. In South Africa, there is no active effective regulatory body for body piercers and no Seta Training available.

When you start looking at the available offers on the market, you stand with confusion about the various ways they are offering to teach you, and in various configurations packaged. The options amongst players as training options for Body Piercers are extremely limited. There is no set norm or structure as a framework, that they need to adhere to. Then maybe you went the professional Piercer route and landed at a studio where they will take you in for an apprenticeship. They will offer no salary or comm or if they do, not even your cat can live on it in today’s times of inflated living. This they will expect you to do for a year at least before your commission structure would take effect. The quality of your apprenticeship is also completely up to the ethical standards of your employer/master-trainer.
It is a field like the old Wild West, with no law and no regulations to uphold ethical conduct.

I think I had merely touched on the iceberg of problems we are experiencing in the South African Body Piercing Industry. And I think I have disturbed you enough. I want to offer a solution and see if you think this could address some of the conundrums of the issues above.

You do not learn how to pierce in 2 or 4 days, you do not learn to pierce off a step-by-step guide. You learn the art and profession of body piercing by being taught medical principles and the correct application of those principles. You must have a sincere want to help people heal. Clients have no idea how their body works and is chasing the look of the Jones’ but their healing rates and physical habits differ from the Jones’ and you need to know where the differences sit to be able to assist professionally. You can only achieve a successful Piercing business with returning clients, and that you achieve by learning CORRECT principles and being able to test yourself and expand your knowledge and skill level through experience and a trainer as a guide to grab a hand when you need it.
